Daiquiri
The Daiquiri is probably most known for it’s strawberry flavored derivative. This is unfortunate because the original Daiquiri bears almost no resemblance.
A favorite of Hemingway and JFK, the Daiquiri is simultaneously refreshing and sophisticated, perfect for hot days, or when you just want a little zing.

The classic recipe is
Ingredients
- 3 oz white rum
- 1 oz lime juice
- 2 bar spoons superfine sugar
Preparation
Pour all ingredients into cocktail shaker filled with ice, shake well and strain into glass.
Bacardi Silver is both inexpensive, and gets rave reviews, but if you know better silver rums for the drink please drop me a line.
Also, since I usually don’t have super fine sugar to hand I substitute 1 oz simple syrup for the bar sugar.
My Favorite Variations
Dark Rum Daiquiri

If you like dark rum, and who doesn’t, you’re going to love it in a Daiquiri. The heavier molasses flavor pairs well with the lime juice, and gives a wonderful aftertaste. Just don’t go too dark. blackstrap rum, for instance, overpowers the lime and makes you think your drinking a molasses cookie.
So far these Dark Rums have worked well for me
- Old Brigand Black Label
- 896 8 Year
- Mount Gay Black Barrel
- Mount Gay Eclipse
Basically if it’s a dark rum that goes well in a Rum and Coke give it a shot.
On the Rocks
I almost always leave the ice from the shaker in the drink when I pour. The Daiquiri is one of those drinks that does not improve with temperature.
